WACO, Texas-Jake Miller's one-out RBI single in the 10th inning
propelled No. 16 Baylor to a 5-4 win over Oral Roberts, Sunday at
Baylor Ballpark.
Miller knocked in Chris Slater from second base, giving the Bears
(2-1) a series victory over the Golden Eagles (1-2) on opening
weekend for the 2011 season.
Once again ORU's bullpen fell apart late in the game. Leading 4-2
in the bottom of the seventh, relievers Tyler
Sparks, Lars
Liguori and Alex Smith combined to allow two runs, two hits and
two walks. Baylor knotted the game at 4-4 on Josh Ludy's two-run,
two-out single off Smith.
Sean
Johnson (0-1) relieved Smith to start the eighth and pitched
the game into extra innings before the Bears finally broke through.
Slater led off with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt
and scored when Miller laced a single down the right-field
line.
ORU took a 1-0 lead in the second when Bennett
Pickar's groundout scored Jared
Schlehuber. Baylor tied the game in the bottom of the third,
scoring an unearned run on an errant pickoff attempt by starting
pitcher Alex Gonzlaez.
The Golden Eagles regained the lead with a pair of runs in the
fifth. Brandon
King scored on a passed ball for a 2-1 lead and Chris
Elder followed with a double, scoring Nick
Baligod for a 3-1 advantage.
Baylor trimmed the lead to 3-2 in the sixth when Slater plated a
run with a fielder's choice.
King made it 4-2 when he led off the seventh with a solo home run,
his first of the season.
The loss somewhat overshadowed an outstanding debut performance by
Gonzalez. The freshman right-hander, an 11th round draft pick of
the Baltimore Orioles last June, allowed two runs (one earned) on
seven hits and walked one with four strikeouts in six innings of
work.
T.J.
Bennett was the only Golden Eagle with more than one hit, going
2-for-3 with a double and a walk. King, in addition to his home
run, also scored twice.
The Golden Eagles open their home schedule when they host Wichita
State, 6:30 p.m., Tuesday at J.L. Johnson Stadium.
