TEMPE,
Ariz.--Ninth-ranked Arizona State scored three runs in the late
innings to rally for a 4-3 win over Oral Roberts, Saturday at
Packard Stadium.
The Sun
Devils (15-3) took advantage of ORU (7-7) relievers in the sixth
and seventh innings, scoring three runs on three hits and three
walks.
The Golden
Eagles wasted no time in jumping on Sun Devils starting pitcher
Kyle Ottoson, scoring a pair of runs in the first inning. Spencer
Barnett opened the game with a double and moved to third when
Cam
Schiller's sacrifice bunt attempt was misplayed by Ottoson.
With runners
and the corners and none out, Nick
Baligod gave ORU a 1-0 lead when his groundout to second scored
Barnett. Chris
Elder followed with a double to left-centerfield, scoring
Schiller for a 2-0 ORU lead.
Arizona
State cut the lead in half in the third inning when Zack McPhee
connected for a solo home run off ORU starter Bryce
Smolen, pulling the Sun Devils within 2-1.
The Sun
Devils gained a 3-2 lead with two runs in the sixth. Andy Workman
and Johnny Ruettiger each had RBI singles as Arizona State took a
3-2 lead.
ORU tied the
game at 3-3 in the top of the seventh when Barnett's one-out single
scored Brandon
Healy from second base. But ASU took advantage of wildness from
relievers Sean
Johnson and Lars
Liguori in the bottom of the seventh when Liguori walked in the
go-ahead run after relieving Johnson with the bases loaded and one
out.
Johnson
(1-2) suffered the loss after allowing three runs in two innings of
work. Barnett had a pair of hits as the Golden Eagles were limited
to just five hits by four ASU pitchers.
The Golden
Eagles wrap up their three-game series with the Sun Devils at 2:30
p.m. CDT on Sunday.
