SAN DIEGO,
Calif.-Pat Colwell's bases loaded single in the bottom of the 14th
inning sent San Diego State to a 4-3 win over Oral Roberts,
Saturday at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
ORU (9-11)
had taken the lead with a pair of runs in the top of the 13th, but
the Aztecs (9-18) rallied in the bottom of the inning, scoring
twice to force another inning in the longest game for the Golden
Eagles in nearly three years.
After
missing out on scoring opportunities in the 10th, 11th and 12th
innings, ORU scored a pair of runs on one play in the 12th. With
runners on first and second, Nick
Baligod drew ball four from Aztecs reliever T.J. Kendzora. But
SDSU catcher Brad Haynal threw down to second base, presumably to
catch an attempted base stealer. But the throw sailed into
centerfield, allowing Cam
Schiller and Graham
McIntyre to score the go-ahead runs.
But the lead
was short-lived. The Aztecs scored a pair of runs in the bottom of
the inning on RBI singles by Colwell and Brandon Meredith, tying
the game and forcing another inning.
ORU starting
pitcher Alex
Gonzalez turned in arguably his most impressive outing of the
season, and he was matched by SDSU starter Cole Swanson. Both
pitched into the ninth inning, but neither figured in the
decision.
The only
blemish for Gonzalez came early, when he surrendered a two-out solo
home run to Meredith in the bottom of the first, staking the Aztecs
to a 1-0 lead.
ORU tied the
game at 1-1 in the top of the fourth when Brett
Sowers doubled home Chris
Elder from second base. Elder singled with one out and moved to
second on a single by Brandon
King.
Following
the home run, Gonzalez retired 11 of the next 12 batters. He
finally ran into some trouble in the fifth when he allowed a
one-out walk and a two-out single to Cody Smith. But Gonzalez
picked off both base runners, including Smith to end the inning and
the threat.
Meanwhile,
Swanson was having a little tougher time with the Golden Eagles but
getting the same end results. ORU placed runners on base in all but
three innings, but had no luck scoring other than the lone run in
the fourth. In all, Swanson stranded nine runners on base before
his bullpen took over with one out in the top of the ninth.
The Golden
Eagles stranded 17 runners on base for the game, including eight
during extra inning play.
Gonzlaez
allowed just a hit and two walks in his last four innings, finally
leaving the game after allowing a leadoff walk in the ninth. In
all, the freshman right-hander struck out six and walked a pair
while allowing one run on just three hits.
ORU
collected nine hits with Spencer
Barnett and Sowers each getting two. San Diego State had just
eight hits but benefitted from 10 walks by ORU pitchers.
Matt
Rush (0-2) suffered the loss, allowing three runs on five hits
and six walks in 4.2 innings of relief work. Steven Moranda (1-2)
picked up the win for the Aztecs.
The Golden
Eagles play the rubber game with the Aztecs at 4 p.m., Sunday.
