Golden Eagles Sweep Doubleheader at Oakland

ROCHESTER, Mich.-Oral Roberts banged out 26 hits and scored 21 runs in sweeping a Summit League doubleheader from Oakland, Saturday at OU Baseball Field. The Golden Eagles won by scores of 15-2 and 6-2.

In game one, Oakland gained an early lead when Ryan Waldhart doubled home Aaron Wick for a 1-0 lead.

But the lead was short-lived for the Golden Grizzlies. ORU tied it in the third on a solo home run by T.J. Bennett, and Brandon King's solo home run leading off the fourth inning gave the Golden Eagles the lead for good at 2-1.

ORU used some two-out magic to extend its lead in the fifth. Consecutive two-out, RBI-doubles by Joey Winiecki, King and Chris Elder gave the Golden Eagles a 5-1 lead.

Oakland got a run back in the bottom of the inning on a solo home run by Waldhart, but Brett Burch's two-run home run in the sixth gave ORU a 7-2 lead.

The Golden Eagles put the game away by scoring eight runs in the top of the ninth, highlighted by Cam Schiller's three-run home run.

Sean Johnson (4-2) picked up the win for ORU by tossing five solid innings, allowing two runs on five hits. Dan Martony tossed four shutout innings of relief in support of Johnson, earning his first career save and lowering his season ERA to 1.80.

The Golden Eagles banged out 14 hits, including four hits by Winikeci and three for King. Winiecki finished 4-for-6 with two runs and two RBI, while King was 3-for-5 with four RBI and three runs.

In game two, Alex Gonzalez (6-5) tossed a complete game and the ORU offense kept on clicking.

The Golden Eagles again wasted no time in getting on the scoreboard, scoring a pair of runs in the first inning. King belted his second solo home run of the day, and Schiller laced an RBI single for a 2-0 lead.

ORU added single runs in the second and third. King knocked in another run with a sacrifice fly in the second, and Bennett Pickar had an RBI single in the third as the Golden Eagles took a 4-0 lead.

Oakland got on the board in the bottom of the fourth when Wick's RBI single made it 4-1. The Golden Eagles got the run back in the fifth when Winiecki scored on a two-out wild pitch for a 5-1 lead.

After Oakland cut the lead to 5-2 with a run in the bottom of the seventh, ORU tacked on an insurance run in the top of the seventh on a two-out RBI single by Winiecki.

Gonzalez allowed two runs on four hits and three walks while striking out eight batters.

Baligod, Winiecki and Schiller each had two hits in the second game, while King knocked in a pair of runs.

The Golden Eagles go for the series sweep when they meet up with the Golden Grizzlies one last time, 12 noon, Sunday.
