FORT WORTH, Texas-Andrew Mitchell tossed seven shutout innings to
lead top-seeded TCU to a 10-2 victory over fourth-seed Oral Roberts
in the opening game for both teams at the Fort Worth Regional,
Friday at Lupton Stadium.
The loss sends ORU (36-21) into a loser's bracket matchup with
Oklahoma at 2 p.m., Saturday. TCU faces Dallas Baptist in the
winner's bracket at 7 p.m.
Mitchell stymied ORU's offense, limiting the Golden Eagles to just
two hits during his time on the mound. The freshman right-hander
walked one and hit a batter and was in complete control when he
exited after the seventh.
The Horned Frogs gave Mitchell plenty of offensive support. TCU
(43-17) took an early 1-0 lead on Joe Weik's RBI single in the
bottom of the first. The Horned Frogs broke the game open in the
bottom of the second by scoring four runs. TCU recorded three RBI
singles and another run scored on an error. When the dust settled
the Frogs owned a 5-0 lead.
Reliever Dan
Martony came on for starter Alex
Gonzalez (8-6) to begin the third and kept TCU off the board
over the next three innings. But in the sixth, TCU's bats came
alive again. A sacrifice fly by Zac Jordan made it 6-0 and a
two-run single by Jantzen Witte gave the Horned Frogs an 8-0
advantage.
TCU's lead swelled to 10-0 when Brett Johnson connected for a
pinch-hit two-run home run in the eighth.
ORU put together a rally in the top of the ninth, getting an RBI
single from Cam
Schiller and a bases loaded walk by T.J.
Bennett to get within 10-2. But the Golden Eagles got no
closer.
Jared
Schlehuber had two of ORU's four hits, while Schiller and Brandon
King had the others.
Gonzalez allowed five runs on seven hits (all singles) to suffer
his first loss since mid-April.
Witte led TCU by going 3-for-4 with three RBI.
