Tulsa, Okla. - Led by freshman Logan
Domenico, Oral Roberts (11-13) defeated Louisiana Tech 9-1 on
Friday as they honored the memory of their fallen teammate, Captain
Ryan K. Iannelli, in the first Armed Forces Appreciation Night at
J.L. Johnson Stadium.
Iannelli, former ORU baseball player and
marine who died during combat operations in Afghanistan on
September 28, was honored in a pregame ceremony in front of 1,235
friends and fans that came to pay their respects. Ryan's Father,
Kenneth, threw out the first pitch with his mother Donna and sister
Amanda looking on.
The Golden Eagles would play inspired
baseball, putting together one of their best overall efforts of the
season.
Domenico, who traded in his redshirt
status earlier in the week to try and help spark ORU's struggling
offense, led the Golden Eagles to victory with a double and three
RBI on the night. Another freshman, Tyler
Coker, also had a big impact by contributing a double and two
RBI.
In all, ORU freshmen combined for six
runs off four hits and six RBI in the game.
Mike
Torrence (2-4) had his best pitching performance of the season,
throwing seven innings, allowing one run off five hits with five
strikeouts.
Louisiana Tech (13-13) was led by Jacob
Derouen, who batted 1-4 and scored the Bulldogs' lone run.
Jeb Stefan (1-5) took the loss after
giving up nine hits and eight runs in 5.1 innings pitched.
Brandon
King got the Golden Eagles started with a base hit to open the
fourth inning, advancing to second when Cam
Schiller was hit by a pitch. Jose
Trevino drove in the first run with an RBI-single into left
field, scoring King. Then Bennett
Pickar made it 2-0 after his grounder to third base was thrown
in the dirt on a play at the plate by Louisiana Tech's Beau Bayliss
which prevented catcher Tyler Qualls from applying the tag on
Schiller who slid home safely.
The Golden Eagles would score four more
runs on back-to-back hits after the error by Bayliss, starting with
Coker's two-run single to right field that brought in Nate
Goro and Trevino. Domenico collected his first RBI as a Golden
Eagle on the next play, plating Coker and Pickar with a single to
make it 6-0.
ORU added two runs in the sixth when
Domenico brought Coker around to score from first with a double
down the left field line to make it 7-0. Then, a double by Cho and
a groundout by King scored Domenico, giving ORU an 8-0
advantage.
Louisiana Tech scored a run in the
seventh, but it was answered in the bottom of the inning with an
RBI-double by Pickar extended the lead once again, 9-1.
