TULSA, Okla-The Golden Eagles bats came
alive on Friday night and Oral Roberts topped Western Illinois 9-3
at J.L. Johnson Stadium.
ORU (18-18, 5-3 Summit) once again looked
like the class of the Summit League as they pounded the
Leathernecks pitching for ten hits and nine runs. Jose
Trevino and Nate
Goro led ORU with a home run and a double each. Goro launched
his first home run of the season, while Trevino recorded his
seventh to go along with three RBI.
Mike
Torrence (3-5) allowed no hits through the first four innings
and ended up throwing six, allowing two runs off four hits with
three strikeouts. Joe
Spring would come on to earn the save by pitching three innings
of relief and allowing one run with four strikeouts.
WIU (12-21-1, 3-6 Summit) has not won a
game at J.L. Johnson Stadium since 1998, and Rob
Walton improves to 31-3 all-time against the Leathernecks.
Starter Nick Smith gave the Leathernecks four innings, allowing two
runs off six hits. Alexander Zarate (0-2) allowed four runs, all
unearned, off one hit and five walks in 1.2 innings of relief.
The Golden Eagles, who started the game
1-8 versus left-handed starters, wasted no time jumping on Western
Illinois' lefty Nick Smith, scoring a run in the bottom of the
first with a Trevino single to score Cho. ORU extended the lead to
2-0 in the second with a groundout by Logan
Domenico that scored Jake
O'Brien.
Western Illinois was able to rally in the
sixth and tie the game 2-2, but ORU answered right back by scoring
four runs in the sixth off back-to-back walks with the bases loaded
and a two-run single by Bennett
Pickar. Goro and Trevino's home runs in the seventh inning
scored three more runs to put the game out of reach, 9-2.
The series will resume on Saturday at
J.L. Johnson Stadium with a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
