ORU Takes Twinbill from South Dakota State

Box Score BROOKINGS, S.D. - Jared Schlehuber

caught fire on Saturday, leading Oral Roberts University to 9-3 and 7-6 victories over South Dakota State University at Erv Huether Field.

ORU (24-19, 11-3 Summit League) has now won seven straight Summit League games.

SDSU falls to 13-27 (2-9 Summit League) with the losses.

GAME ONE - ORU 9, SOUTH DAKOTA STATE 3

A six-run fifth inning led the Golden Eagles to an opening game victory. Kurt Giller (4-4) picked up the win after allowing just one run in six innings while striking out six.

Adam Bray (2-3) suffered the loss after giving up nine runs (six earned) in 5.1 innings.

Beau Hanowski gave the Jackrabbits an early lead in the third inning, doubling home Andrew Melton to make the score 1-0.

The Golden Eagles took control with the fifth inning explosion. Nate Goro tied the game on an RBI fielder's choice, and two batters later Logan Domenico singled through the left side to give ORU a 2-1 lead.

But the party wasn't over as Cam Schiller, Jose Trevino and Schlehuber followed with three straight run-scoring hits. Schlehuber's single plated a pair, making the score 6-1.

Defensive miscues plagued the Jacks in the sixth. Bennett Pickar scored on a throwing error, and Schlehuber singled home two more unearned runs to boost the lead to 9-1.

SDSU scored two consolation runs in the 7th inning, but the Golden Eagles held on for the six-run victory.

Schlehuber and Schiller were each 2-for-5 in the first game, while Pickar was 4-for-5 and scored a pair of runs.

GAME TWO - ORU 7, SOUTH DAKOTA STATE 6

A two-out single by Domenico with two out in the seventh and final frame gave ORU a one-run victory in the second game of the day.

The base hit made a winner out of Joe Spring (3-1) who tossed 2.1 innings of shutout relief. Austin Busse (2-4) was the losing pitcher after allowing two runs in 3.1 innings.

The finale looked like an easy ORU win after the Golden Eagles scored three runs in the second inning. Schlehuber led off the inning with a single and scored on yet another SDSU error. A sacrifice fly by Goro and a Kevin Cho single added to the lead, making it 3-0.

But the Jacks scored three runs to tie the game in the third. Melton scored on a throwing error, while Phil Paquette and Eric Cain came through with RBI groundouts to make the score 3-3.

Each team scored twice in the fourth inning. ORU's runs came on a Schlehuber single, while Hanowski doubled home a pair to tie the game at 5-5.

SDSU took the lead in the fifth inning when Aaron Machbitz doubled to centerfield, making the score 6-5.

But Schlehuber came through in the clutch again in the sixth, doubling in his seventh and final RBI of the day to tie the game.

One inning later Domenico found a hole with two out to give ORU the lead, and Spring pitched a one-two-three bottom of the seventh to secure the victory for the visitors.

Schlehuber and Domenico each tallied three base hits in the second game.

The Golden Eagles and Jackrabbits will finish their four-game series on Sunday, with a 1 pm CT first pitch.
