TULSA, Okla. - Despite being slowed by
two rain delays and trailing by five runs in the first inning, Oral
Roberts (14-15) rallied behind a five-RBI performance by Cam Schiller to defeat Oakland 13-5 at J.L. Johnson
Stadium on Saturday.
Schiller was 5-5 with two doubles and
three runs to lead ORU, while Logan Domenico and Brandon King each added multiple hits and an RBI. Jared Schlehuber hit his ninth home run of the
season, and Jose Trevino collected two RBI with back-to-back
sacrifice flies.
Schiller improved his season batting
average to .303 and now leads ORU with 26 RBI on the season.
Joe Spring (1-1) earned the win by throwing 6.2
scoreless innings of relief work with eight strikeouts.
Oakland (5-22) could not produce any
offense after jumping out to an early 5-0 lead in the first inning,
putting together just four hits the remainder of the game.
Brady Adamek (0-4) pitched five innings
for Oakland with six earned runs on nine hits.
After getting roughed up in the first
inning, the Golden Eagles answered with two runs in the bottom of
the inning.
The rally began with Back-to-back singles
by Domenico and King, followed by a double by Schiller. King was
caught in a rundown between second and third and no one would score
on Schiller's double.
A wild pitch by Adamek allowed Domenico
to score to make it 5-1 ORU, and a sacrifice fly by Jose Trevino plated King to make it 5-2.
A rain delay halted play in the fifth
inning for over an hour, but when play resumed, the Golden Eagles
wasted no time taking the lead back from Oakland, scoring four runs
in the bottom of the fifth. The Rally started with a walk by Kevin Cho, followed by Domenico's second single
of the game. King hit into a fielder's choice, but was able to beat
out the throw to put runners on the corners with one out.
Schiller singled to right field for his
first RBI, scoring Cho, then Trevino hit his second sacrifice fly
of the game to score King and cut the Oakland lead to one.
Schlehuber gave ORU the lead for good
with a two-run opposite field blast, 6-5.
The Golden Eagles would score five more
in the sixth and two in the seventh to cap the 13-5 victory.
Lars Liguori did not allow a hit as he pitched the
eighth and ninth innings to finish the game.
Because of the inclement weather, the
second game of the doubleheader was rescheduled for Sunday. The
first game will begin at 1 p.m. immediately followed by the final
game of the series.
