Deadlocked after six innings, Oral Roberts University hung
crooked numbers on the board in each of the last three frames to
rout IPFW, 11-0, on Friday afternoon at Mastodon Field.
The pitcher and catcher duo of Drew Bowen and Bennett Pickar were ORU's stars of the day. Bowen
(4-2) went the distance, scattering just four hits while striking
out nine.
Pickar, meanwhile, went 3-for-4 with a grand slam and six RBI.
Charles Weaver (4-6) took the loss for IPFW, allowing seven earned
runs in 7.2 innings of work. He struck out eight batters before
running out of gas in the 7th inning.
With the win, ORU is now 28-20 (12-4 Summit League), while the
Mastodons fall to 15-35 (7-14 Summit League).
The Golden Eagles finally crossed the scoring threshold in the 7th
inning. After Jared Schlehuber doubled to lead off the inning, Brandon King and Brandon Healy each drew walks to load the bases for
Pickar. ORU's backstop launched his second home run in three games,
a towering drive to left field to give the road team a 4-0
lead.
Though the 4-0 lead was more than enough for Bowen, the Golden
Eagles added on to the lead in the 8th inning. King doubled home a
run and Pickar added a two-run single up the middle to stretch the
lead to 7-0.
Four more Golden Eagles came home in the 9th. Kevin Cho opened the scoring with an RBI single, and
Cam Schiller followed with a sacrifice fly two
batters later. A bases loaded walk to King and a run-scoring
fielder's choice by Healy pushed the lead to 11-0.
Bowen faced just 32 batters in the game, getting the 'Dons in order
in the 3rd, 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th innings. The senior retired
IPFW's last 14 batters.
Schlehuber was 2-for-4 with two runs scored, while King and Jose Trevino also scored twice in the
victory.
The four-game series continues on Saturday with a doubleheader at
Mastodon Field. First pitch is scheduled for 11 am CT.
