FORT WAYNE, Ind.-After ending game one after seven innings in a
15-3 run-rule victory, Oral Roberts fell 6-5 to IPFW on a
game-winning single in game two of Saturday's double header at
Mastodon Field.
Four different Oral Roberts (29-21, 13-5) batters had at least
four combined hits on the day, led by Kevin
Cho's 4-for-6 effort. Cam
Schiller had five hits in nine at-bats, while Jared
Schlehuber had a combined five RBI.
GAME ONE - ORU 15, IPFW 3
Schlehuber ended game one 2-for-3, and was one of five Golden
Eagles with at least two hits, leading the team with four RBI,
while Bennett
Pickar had a 3-for-4 day with three runs scored and three
RBI.
Mike
Torrence got the win in game one, giving up just four hits
while striking out seven in 5.1 innings of work. Joe
Spring came in and struck out three in the final 1.2 innings of
work, allowing just one baserunner.
After blowing open a 0-0 game in the sixth inning on Friday,
Oral Roberts wasted no time scoring in the first game of Saturday's
double header, scoring six runs in the first inning. A leadoff
double by Logan
Domenico started the rally in which the Golden Eagles batted
around the order, using seven hits to take the early 6-0 lead,
despite leaving the bases loaded.
A two-run home run by Kristian Gayday cut into the ORU lead in
the second, but the Golden Eagles were far from done. A pair of
errors on the IPFW center fielder plated one run, and a Brandon
Healy double scored another. Schlehuber's second sacrifice fly
of the game plated a third to make it 9-2 ORU.
Again IPFW tried to mount a rally as M. White doubled and scored
on an RBI single by C DeBoe, but Pickar's seventh RBI in the past
two games pushed the lead back out to seven at 10-3 after four
innings.
The final runs of the shortened game one came in the top of the
seventh as the Golden Eagles plated five more runs on four hits,
also taking advantage of a pair of walks.
GAME TWO - IPFW 6, ORU 5
The bats continued to be hot in game two as ORU registered 13
hits and took advantage of three Mastodon errors, but left nine
runners on base in the loss. Cho had three hits in the game, while
all five of the runs were scored by the top six hitters in the ORU
lineup.
Lars
Liguori was charged with the loss, giving up the game-winning
run. Along with Joe
Spring and Alex
Gonzalez, the trio combined for five strike outs but walked six
batters.
ORU grabbed an early 1-0 lead as the Golden Eagles took
advantage of an IPFW error to score one run on a groundout in the
second inning.
IPFW answered in the third and took its first lead of the series
with two runs in the third after a Lucas Salerno walk and a Clay
Hathaway homer.
It looked like ORU would blow things open again in the fifth as
they mounted a rally behind a leadoff single by Cho. After Schiller
drew the walk, Jose
Trevino shot one through the left side to score a run and tie
the game. An error by the IPFW left fielder scored two more runs,
and a double by Schlehuber and singles by King and Healy scored the
final run of the inning, making it 5-2 in favor of ORU.
A pair of IPFW doubles in the sixth scored two runs to get them
within one, and down to the final out of the game, Steve Danielak
punched an RBI single through the right side to tie the game and
send it into extra innings.
Down to the final out again in the bottom of the ninth, a bad
hop on a grounder off the bad of Danielak scored the Mastodon
runner from second and IPFW notched its first victory of the series
over ORU.
The series finale will be played at 10 a.m. on Sunday from Fort
Wayne.
