Box Score
TULSA, Okla.-After dropping game one of the double header 5-4,
Oral Roberts (32-22, 16-6) rebounded and won game two 3-2 in
dramatic fashion over North Dakota State (38-17, 14-9) to split
Friday's double header at J.L. Johnson Stadium.
After tying the ORU record for homeruns in a season by a
freshman yesterday, Jose
Trevino surpassed Craig Colbert's 18-year-old record by hitting
his 12th bomb on Friday in the first game of the double
header.
GAME ONE - NDSU 5 - ORU 4
Despite getting two-hit performances from Logan
Domenico, Trevino and Nate
Goro, ORU committed two costly errors late in the game,
allowing NDSU to take game one of the double header. Lars
Liguori (0-3) was hit with the loss after coming into the game
in relief. Kurt
Giller started the game on the mound and went five innings,
giving up two runs on three hits.
For NDSU, it was a 3-for-3 performance by Max Casper that
highlighted the offense as both teams had eight hits. Starter David
Ernst (6-0) got the victory on the mound after six innings of work,
while Kyle Kingsley closed out the game with his fifth save of the
season.
Both teams threatened early in game one with runners in scoring
position, but it was a solo homerun from Trevino in the fourth that
finally started the scoring, giving him the ORU freshman record
with 12 home runs on the season, and giving ORU the 1-0 lead.
It was a lead that would not last long though, as NDSU answered
with a two-out, two-RBI double into the left field corner by Tim
Colwell in the top of the fifth, making it 2-1 Bison.
ORU responded in the bottom of the inning as Domenico ripped a
shot up the middle and off the leg of the pitcher and into left
field, scoring Brandon
Healy from second to tie the game 2-2.
In the top of the seventh, NDSU regained the lead on a two-out
double into the right field corner, this time by Nick Colwell,
easily scoring Kyle Kleinendorst from third. A pair of wild pitches
allowed the Bison to add to their lead as Colwell came around to
score to make it 4-2.
The Bison tacked on another one in the eighth as a single up the
middle by Casper allowed Michael Leach to score and make it a
three-run NDSU lead.
ORU took advantage of a couple of NDSU errors to score two runs
in the bottom of the eighth, cutting it to a 5-4 game, but ORU
could not find the answer in the bottom of the ninth, dropping game
one of the double header.
GAME TWO - ORU 3 - NDSU 2
Logan
Domenico and Jared
Schlehuber accounted for five of the six hits in the game,
while Joe
Spring (5-1) got the victory on the mound with 2.1 innings of
scoreless relief on the mound.
For NDSU, Jake Heck's(1-1) runner proved the difference as he
was charged with the loss, while Nick Anderson had a 3-for-3
performance at the plate. The Bison out-hit ORU 9-6, but left six
runners on base.
Domenico started a first-inning rally for ORU in game two,
lining one back at the pitcher, hitting him in the chest. Domenico
reached safely, and after a scary moment, Anderson stayed in the
game. Cam
Schiller and Jared
Schlehuber pounded back-to-back doubles down the right and left
field lines, respectively, scoring a pair of runs to give the
Golden Eagles a 2-0 lead.
They would hold that lead until the fifth inning, when a Nick
Colwell through the right side scored Michael Leach from third,
cutting it to a 2-1 ORU advantage. A wild pitch allowed Tim Colwell
to score and tie the game at 2-2.
Down to the final out of the regularly-scheduled seven inning
game, Domenico finished what he started as he blasted a
game-winning single into right centerfield, scoring Kevin
Cho from third to give the Golden Eagles the 3-2 victory.
The two teams will meet in the final game of the regular season
on Saturday at 1 p.m. A victory on Saturday would give ORU the
outright Summit League Regular Season Championship. A loss by ORU
would put the Golden Eagles' fate in the hands of Oakland, who
would win the championship with a victory over Southern Utah, but
give it to ORU with a loss to the Thunderbirds.
