Trevino Homers Twice as ORU Sweeps Mississippi Valley State

Box Score TULSA, Okla. - Jose Trevino

launched two mammoth home runs on Saturday afternoon, leading Oral Roberts University to a doubleheader sweep of Mississippi Valley State University at J.L. Johnson Stadium. ORU took the opener in comeback fashion, 4-3, while the second game was an 8-1 final.

ORU improves to 26-20 with the wins, while the Delta Devils fall to 14-34.

GAME ONE - ORU 4, MISSISSIPPI VALLEY STATE 3

Trevino was the hero of game one, going 2-for-4 with a home run and a triple, knocking in three of the Golden Eagles' four runs, scoring the other on a sacrifice fly to give ORU a late lead. Despite a solid start from Drew Bowen, who went 7.0 innings giving up just one earned run and striking out eight, it was Joe Spring (4-1) who got the win in relief on the mound, closing the game out without giving up a hit.

Cam Schiller had the other two hits for ORU as they got the victory despite getting out-hit 7-4.

Starter Kameron Stady (2-8) took the loss for the Delta Devils, pitching seven innings and getting charged with all four runs. Michael Lowe had three hits to lead MVSU, while Edmund Cheatham scored a pair of runs.

The Delta Devils struck first, plating one run in the top of the first inning as Cheatham drew the leadoff walk. He advanced to third on a line-shot down the first base line, and when Lowe got caught in a rundown, Cheatham stole home to make it 1-0.

ORU drew a pair of walks in the bottom half of the inning and threatened to take over the lead, but stranded both. It wasn't until the fourth inning that the Golden Eagles had their first hit of the game as Schiller lined one into center field.

An error on what looked to be an inning-ending double play in the top of the fifth led to a couple more MVSU runs, giving them a 3-0 advantage over the Golden Eagles.

The second hit of the game for ORU came in the bottom of the sixth inning in the form of a towering two-run home run over the left field wall, scoring Logan Domenico after a leadoff walk, Trevino's ninth long-ball of the year.

Trevino and Domenico did it again the bottom of the eighth to tie the game as Domenico again reached safely via a leadoff walk, scoring on Trevino's third triple of the season, tying things at 3-3. As Jared Schlehuber lifted one into the left field corner, Trevino scored on the sacrifice fly to give ORU its first lead of the game.

Spring was able to sit the Delta Devils down in order in the ninth to seal the victory for ORU.

GAME 2 - ORU 8, MISSISSIPPI VALLEY STATE 1

Unlike the opener, the second game of the series was a blowout in ORU's favor. The Golden Eagles plated three runs in the second inning and were never truly challenged after that.

Alex Gonzalez (5-2) was on point in the finale, holding the Delta Devils to just one run in eight inning of work. He struck out seven and picked up the victory.

Barrett Baxley (1-3) gave up four runs in 2.1 innings and was saddled with the loss.

ORU took the lead with a big second inning. A bases loaded walk by Bennett Pickar gave ORU the first run of the game, and a Nate Goro single plated a pair to make the score 3-0.

Brandon King tacked on to the lead in the third, singling home another run to make the score 4-0.

Trevino continued his hot day in the fourth inning, doubling home Kevin Cho. The Golden Eagles would load the bases three batters later, but a diving stop by MVSU third baseman Seth Milliorn kept the score 5-0.

ORU broke out the home run swings in the seventh inning to put the game away. Pickar led off the inning with his first homer of the season, and Trevino capped the frame with his 10th, a two-run shot, to make it 8-0.

The Delta Devils finally got on the board in the eighth inning. Cheatham led off the inning with a single and came around to score on a Luke Brumfield groundout, cutting their deficit to 8-1.

Phillip Wilson pitched a shutout ninth inning for ORU to close out the win.

Pickar was 3-for-3 in the victory, while Schlehuber, King, Schiller and Trevino all added two hits each. Trevino had a team-high three RBI.

The two teams will be back in action for the third and final game of the series on Sunday at J.L. Johnson Stadium with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
