Six extra-base hits lead ORU past Wichita State, 9-4

Box Score

TULSA, Okla. - A big day at the plate by Matt Brandy helped Oral Roberts University baseball snap a three-game losing skid to Wichita State as the Golden Eagles smashed the Shockers 9-4 at J.L. Johnson Stadium on Wednesday.

Both ORU and WSU evened their overall records to 16-16. It was the first Golden Eagle win against the visitors from Wichita since March 13, 2012. The Shockers swept all three games of the 2013 season.

Brandy led the offensive charge by the Golden Eagles with a home run and a double, driving in three runs and scoring twice. Audie Afenir had a pair of doubles, Logan Domenico had a double and a single and Graham McIntyre added a pinch hit double.

Six extra base hits, including five doubles, are the most by the Golden Eagles in a game this season.

Five ORU pitchers took the mound against the Shockers, with Phillip Wilson (1-1) starting the contest and earning the win. Wilson went 2.2 innings, allowing a run on three hits and striking out two.

Casey Gillaspie had a big two-run blast for the Shockers in the third inning to lead the Shockers. Micah Green finished the evening with three hits, while Dayne Parker and Garrett Bayliff added a pair.

Despite the loss, WSU outhit the Golden Eagles, 12-10.

Garrett Brummett (1-1) took the loss for the Shockers as he allowed five runs in just one inning of work. Brummett started the second inning, but the Golden Eagles put four runs on the board before he was able to record and out.

Domenico started the game by reaching second on a stand up double to left center and advanced to third on a balk by Brummett. He crossed the plate on a groundout by Jose Trevino to give the Golden Eagles an early 1-0 lead.

ORU chased Brummett from the game in the top of the second as Brandy followed an Anthony Sequeira walk with a shot over the left field wall for his third home run of the season. With runners on second and third, Brandon Healy grounded out to short to bring home Joey Migliaccio, making it a 4-0 game.

Two batters later, Emmanuel Forcier delivered an RBI single to left field to drive in Afenir, extending the Golden Eagles lead to 5-0.

Following a pitching change by ORU with two outs and a man on base, the Shockers' Gillaspie took the first pitch and sent it well beyond the left field wall to cut the ORU lead to 5-2.

The Golden Eagles added their sixth run of the game in the bottom of the fourth on a Domenico RBI single through the right side that plated Brandy, making it a 6-2 contest.

The Shockers tried to chip away at the lead in the top of the sixth inning as Tanner Kirk flew out to deep center to score Chase Simpson on a sacrifice fly. However, in the bottom half of the inning, McIntyre and Afenir picked up back to back doubles to score a run, and Domenico pushed in Afenir a few batters later on a bases loaded groundout to extend the ORU lead to 8-3.

In the bottom of the seventh, Brandy struck again with a double off the left field wall to drive in Tyler Boss to make it a 9-3 game. The final run of the game came in the top of the eighth as Bayliff doubled to lead off the inning and eventually scored on a Kirk groundout.

Colin Hightower took the ball to begin the ninth and struck out two Shockers swinging and induced a pop up to seal the Golden Eagle victory.

The win moved the Golden Eagles midweek record to 6-1. Up next, ORU looks for their first Southland Conference series victory of the season as the Golden Eagles travel to Stephen F. Austin for a three-game set beginning on Friday. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
