PHOENIX, Ariz. – An offensive drought in the final minutes of regulation for the Oral Roberts women's basketball team allowed Grand Canyon to rally past the Golden Eagles, 66-64 in overtime Monday night.
The Golden Eagles led nearly the entire game pulling ahead early with a 7-0 lead in the first quarter and led 34-23 at the break. A solid defensive effort held the 'Lopes to just 31 percent from the field and forced 13 turnovers to help gain the lead.
However, in the second half the Golden Eagles went cold while GCU shot 41 percent compared to just 23 percent by ORU.
Faith Ihim led the way for ORU as she narrowly missed a double-double with 14 points and nine rebounds. Bria Pitts joined Ihim in double figures with 13 points in the loss.
Dana Jones had a game-high 18 points for the 'Lopes while Cheyenne Hendrington and Zelor Massaquoi each posted double-doubles. Hendrington finished with 12 points and 19 boards while Massaquoi added 12 points and 10 rebounds.
TURNING POINT
Dana Jones hit a runner in the lane with 1:39 left in overtime to pull GCU within a point at 62-61. The Golden Eagles missed a jumper on their next possession and Hendrington was fouled on a drive to the basket as she hit a pair of free throws with 56 seconds left in the extra period to put GCU on top for good, 63-62
THE LEADERS
Oral Roberts: Faith Ihim finished with 14 points and nine boards to lead the Golden Eagles.
Grand Canyon: Dana Jones scored a game-high 18 points and pulled down nine rebounds to pace the 'Lopes.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- After shooting 44 percent from the field in the first half, ORU shot just 23 percent in the second half.
- ORU scored 19 points off turnovers after forcing 22 by Grand Canyon.
- The Golden Eagles recorded 13 steals in the game and have double digit steals in back-to-back games for the first time since December 4, 2013 and December 16, 2013 at Missouri (14) and at Northwestern (12).
- Faith Ihim and Bria Pitts have both scored in double figures for ORU in both games this season. Ihim added 14 while Pitts finished with 13.
- The overtime game was the first for ORU since a 79-71 loss at Marquette on December 18, 2013. ORU has not won an overtime game since February, 18, 2012 at IPFW, 62-61.
- Grand Canyon leads the all-time series with ORU 2-0.
