TULSA, Okla. – The Oral Roberts women's basketball team erased a nine point deficit in the final four minutes sending the game to overtime as the Golden Eagles earned a 69-65 victory over Rockhurst Saturday afternoon in exhibition action.
The Golden Eagles trailed by as many as nine points most of the second half as ORU took its first lead of the half with 7:10 left in the fourth quarter.
Four players finished in double figures led by Faith Ihim and Kaylan Mayberry who poured in 16 points each while Ihim added six rebounds. Dorottya Balla added 11 points as Bria Pitts also scored 11 points in her ORU debut.
Rockhurst shot 38 percent from behind the three-point line hitting 12 treys in the game. However, the defense for ORU forced 19 Rockhurst turnovers and tallied 13 steals in the win.
The Turning Point
Kaylan Mayberry made two free throws with 7:10 left in the game to put ORU on top 52-51 giving the Golden Eagles their first lead of the second half. However the Golden Eagles pulled away in overtime opening on a 7-2 run and making 7-of-7 free throws to seal the win.
The Leaders
Oral Roberts: Faith Ihim finished with 16 points and six rebounds while Kaylan Mayberry also added 16 points.
Rockhurst: Lauren Meyers and Mary Dineen also scored 16 points each to lead the Hawks as Dineen finished 4-of-10 from behind the three-point line.
Inside the Box Score
- Although an exhibition it was the first overtime game for ORU since falling 79-71 to Marquette on December 18, 2013.
- Pitts scored 11 points and pulled in three boards while going 3-of-7 from behind the three-point line.
- Martianez added eight points and seven boards in her ORU debut.
- The Golden Eagles shot 22-of-26 to finish at 84 percent from the free throw line in the win. Last season ORU shot just 71 percent from the line.
News & Notes
- Five Golden Eagles made the Mabee Center debut as Bria Pitts, Ashley Beatty Jasauen Beard, Blair Bryce and Maria Martianez all saw action.
- The Golden Eagles will open the regular season at home next Saturday against Evangel. ORU is 6-1 all-time against the Crusaders and have won the last five meetings.
- ORU will play three of their first four games in Tulsa including on November 20 in the PSO Mayor's Cup at the University of Tulsa. The Golden Eagles also host Little Rock on November 24.
