Â
TULSA, OKLA. - The Oral Roberts baseball team split the pitching-dominated Sunday doubleheader with St. Thomas to close out the regular season series.
Â
In game one, the pitching was the story for both sides as the Tommies and Golden Eagles threw up zeros on the scoreboard through four innings.Â
Â
St. Thomas finally opened the scoring in the top of the fifth inning with a two-run homer and a sacrifice fly to take a 3-0 lead. That would be all right-hander
Brendan Asher would give up in his career-high 6.0 innings of work.
Â
ORU's offense continued to stay quiet up until the eighth inning, where with two out
Cooper Combs hit his seventh homer, tying him for the team lead, and driving in his team-leading 38
th run to bring the Golden Eagles within two.
Â
Braydon Sanford came out of the bullpen, tossing 3.0 scoreless innings, working around a lead-off hit in the top of the ninth, giving ORU a chance down two going into the bottom half.Â
Â
Oral Roberts brought the tying run to the plate after
Keaton Campbell walked with one out, but the next two batters were sat down on strikes. Despite out-hitting St. Thomas 8-7, ORU dropped game one by a final of 3-1.
Â
In game two, pitching remained superior as
Conner Johnson pit together three quality innings, giving up just one run on three hits, one walk, and striking out one batter. The Tommies got on the board in the second inning with a double play, driving in the run.
Â
The Golden Eagles responded right away with two in the bottom half as
Jack Schark scored on an error in left from
Makani Tanaka's double. Moments later,
Ethan Fender reached on a fielder's choice, driving in Tanaka to take a 2-1 lead.
Â
From there, it was all
Dalton Patten out of the bullpen. After giving up multiple runs in each of his last three outings, he tossed 5.0 scoreless innings, allowing only three hits, no walks, and striking out one batter for his longest outing of the season.Â
Â
In the ninth,
Conner Floyd came out of the bullpen to shut the door, and he did just that, sitting the Tommies down to grab his eighth save of the season and secure a doubleheader split on Sunday afternoon.
