WACO, Texas €" The Oral Roberts University baseball
team was shut out for the first time this season in a 4-0 loss to
Baylor University on Sunday afternoon at Baylor Ballpark in Waco,
Texas. After taking a 9-3 decision from the Bears (5-2) on Friday
night, the Golden Eagles (4-2) dropped the final two games of the
series.
Baylor starter Cory VanAllen (2-0) was in complete control from the
start, as he threw eight shut out innings. VanAllen gave up only
four hits while striking out eight and walking two.
After five scoreless inning on both sides, Baylor finally got to
ORU's Nick Jones (1-1) (Broken Arrow, Okla.) in
the bottom of the sixth. A pair of singles sandwiched around a
sacrifice bunt put runners on the corners, setting up a one-out
double by Kyle Reynolds that put the Bears ahead 2-0.
Dane Towery (Mustang, Okla.) then relieved Jones
and struck out the next two batters, ending any further scoring
threat.
The home team would add to their lead in the eighth, again thanks
to the bat of Reynolds. With one on and two out, the Baylor first
baseman took Towery's first pitch over the wall in right center
field, providing the final score of 4-0.
Reynolds was three-for-four on the day, driving in all four Bear
runs.
First baseman Rene Recio (Corpus Christi, Texas)
accounted for two of the four Golden Eagle hits, ripping a single
in the first and adding a double in the fourth.
Shortstop Michael Hollimon (Dallas, Texas) had a
single in the third and third baseman Jon Tackett
(Tulsa, Okla.) added another single in the seventh.
ORU will next travel to Mobile, Alabama, for a weekend series with
South Alabama. Game one of the three game series will take place
Friday night beginning at 6:00 p.m.
