No. 8 Miami Batters ORU, 17-6

CORAL GABLES, Fla. €" No. 8 Miami scored 17 runs on 17 hits as the Hurricanes handed Oral Roberts University a 17-6 defeat, Friday at Mark Light Stadium.

Miami (24-7) scored three runs in the bottom of the first off ORU starter Taylor McIntyre (Edmond, Okla.). Two runs scored on a walk, a single and a sacrifice fly, and first baseman Brendan Katin followed with a solo home run for a 3-0 lead.

The Golden Eagles (13-12) plated a run in the top of the second on a sacrifice fly by catcher Brian Aguailar (San Luis Obispo, Calif.), trimming Miami's lead to 3-1. But the Hurricanes answered with five runs in the bottom of the inning. A two-run single by Katin gave Miami a 6-1 lead and chased McIntyre (2-6) from the game. Catcher Eddy Rodriguez then greeted reliever Matt Hancock (Okmulgee, Okla.) with a two-run double for an 8-1 advantage.

Designated hitter Rene Recio (Corpus Christi, Texas) and centerfielder Tim Torres (Rocklin, Calif.) hit back-to-back doubles to start the fourth and third baseman Jon Tackett (Tulsa, Okla.) drove in Torres with a ground out as ORU closed to within 8-3. But again Miami answered in the bottom of the inning, scoring four runs and grabbing a 12-3 lead.

Recio pulled ORU within 13-5 with a two-run triple in the fifth and after Miami made it 14-5 with a run in the bottom of the fifth, a bases-loaded walk to Torres in the seventh pulled ORU within 14-6 but that was as close as the Golden Eagles got.

Miami starter Ricky Orta (6-2) picked up the win despite allowing five runs on six hits over 6.0 innings of work. McIntyre gave up eight runs in 1.2 innings on five hits and three walks in taking the loss. ORU reliever Justin Edwards (Muldrow, Okla.) struck out five batters in 3.1 innings, allowing one earned run on five hits.

Recio finished the game 2-for-2 with a pair of walks and two runs scored. Second baseman Brian Hanson (Kelseyville, Calif.) was 2-for-5 and Torres drove in two runs.

Miami second baseman Walter Diaz paced the Hurricanes, going 4-for-5 with three runs.

The Golden Eagles and Hurricanes play game three of their series at 6 p.m., Saturday.
