SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -
Oral Roberts University split a pair of matches on Saturday,
taking down Austin Peay in their morning match, 3-0, before falling
to No. 11 Dayton in their afternoon match by the same score on the
final day of the University Plaza Invitational.
With the split, ORU is now 4-3 on the season heading into Tuesday's
home opener against Tulsa.
ORU 3, AUSTIN PEAY 0
ORU hit a blistering .342 for the afternoon, taking down the Lady
Govs in a much closer match than the 3-0 score line would indicate.
The Golden Eagles won by scores of 25-23, 25-21 and 25-20.
Tatum Fredeen led the ORU attack with 16 kills,
while Jessica Pancratz added 14 kills and posted a .571
hitting percentage. Bruna Silva tallied 22 digs to head up the defensive
charge, and Sheina Fernandes was a part of five blocks, a
team-high.
Austin Peay (2-6) hit .242 in a losing effort, with Jada Stotts
posting team highs of 19 kills and 10 digs.
The opening set was extremely tight, with neither side leading by
more than three points. Austin Peay was in prime position to take
the set after a Stotts kill gave them a 23-22 lead. But Fernandes
answered with a kill of her own, and ORU took the next two points
to edge the Lady Govs, 25-23.
Set two was also very close, as an ORU error gave APSU a late 18-17
lead. But a Fredeen kill evened the frame at 18-all and started a
four-point Golden Eagle rally. The senior had another blast to
stretch the lead to 21-18, and the Golden Eagles held on for a
25-21 victory.
ORU fell behind in the third set, 8-4, prompting a timeout from Sheera Sirola. The stoppage worked wonders for the
Eagles, who scored five of the next six points and tied the match
at 9-all. Later, Pancratz tallied back-to-back kills as part of a
5-0 run that gave ORU an 18-14 lead, and the junior came through
with another blast on the match's final point to give Sirola's club
a 25-20 victory.
Laura Taylor led the Golden Eagles with 48 set
assists.
ORU is now 2-0 all-time against Austin Peay.
No. 11 DAYTON 3, ORU 0
The Golden Eagles had Dayton (6-0) on the ropes early in the match
before the nationally-ranked Flyers put things away in the third
set. Dayton won by scores of 30-28, 25-20 and 25-11.
With the loss, ORU has now dropped 28 straight matches against
ranked competition, dating back to a 3-2 NCAA Tournament victory
over No. 10 Colorado on Dec. 7, 1997.
Pancratz led the Golden Eagles with 13 kills, while Olivia Ophus had a team-high 14 digs. Silva had 12,
snapping a streak of 29 straight matches where the junior led the
Golden Eagles in the category.
Dayton hit .325 and held ORU to a .227 hitting percentage. Rachel
Krabacher led the Flyers with 18 kills, and Janna Kafka posted a
team-best 21 digs.
ORU led for much of the first set and used back-to-back kills from
Fredeen and Pancratz to take a 17-14 advantage. Later a Luara Rosa kill made it 23-20, ORU, but the Golden
Eagles could not close the set out. Dayton came back to earn three
set points and ORU had one of their own before the Flyers finally
cashed in, scoring the final two points of the set to take a 30-28
victory.
Krabacher started the second set with a Dayton kill, starting a 6-1
run to open the frame. A kill from Fernandes capped a bit of a
rally by the Golden Eagles, cutting the deficit to 10-7, but the
Flyers never relinquished the lead. A Samantha Selsky service ace
ended the set, giving Dayton a 25-20 win.
Dayton took control of the third set with an early 7-2 run, which
included three kills and an ace from Krabacher, to push their lead
to 10-5. The Flyers put the match away with a late 6-0 run, and
they took the final set by a count of 25-11.
ORU opens their home schedule on Tuesday evening, when they host
Tulsa. Match time is scheduled for 7 pm CT at the Kenneth H. Cooper
Aerobics Center on the ORU campus.
