Game 1 Box Score

Game 2 Box Score

TULSA, Okla. -- Alex Chalfant struck a career-high 11 batters in game one and Grant Plumley continued his recent hot hitting in game two as Oral Roberts University swept a Mid-Continent Conference doubleheader from Southern Utah, taking the opener by a 7-1 count and winning the nightcap 7-2, Saturday at J.L. Johnson Stadium.

ORU (29-17, 10-1) extended its season-best winning streak to 10 games with the two wins. Southern Utah (1-22, 5-6) now trails first place ORU by five games in the Mid-Con standings.

Chalfant (3-2) allowed one unearned run on five hits over 6.1 innings. He walked two in addition to his career-high 11 strikeouts, and has struck out 21 batters in 11.1 innings over his last two starts. A freshman right-hander, Chalfant's performance in game one came one night after fellow freshman Taylor McIntyre, a lefty, fanned 12 without a walk in a complete game victory over SUU.

Dennis Bigley belted a three-run homer in the first inning of game one, giving Chalfant more than enough to work with. Chalfant and reliever Justin Ramsey, who pitched 2.2 innings of one-hit relief for his third save, combined to strike out 15 batters in nine innings.

Josh Lex and Ryan Welborn drove in runs in the sixth for a 5-1 lead and Lex later added an RBI groundout for a 6-1 advantage in the seventh. Kevin Lamb scored from third in the eighth inning when Matt VanDerBosch was caught in a run down between first and second.

Wes Matthews (2-2) suffered the loss for Southern, allowing six runs on 10 hits in 6.1 innings.

In game two, the Golden Eagles struggled in the early innings against Jason Gillins (1-3), before taking a 2-0 lead in the third. Plumley, who was 6-for-7 in the doubleheader, knocked had an RBI double and later scored on David Castillo's single. ORU added three more runs in the fifth with two scoring on a Lex single for a 5-0 lead.

The Thunderbirds cut it to 5-1 with a run in the top of the sixth, but ORU made it 7-1 with an RBI squeeze bunt from VanDerBosch and an RBI groundout by Plumley. Southern Utah scored a run in the top of the seventh for the final margin.

Dallas Martin (5-6) hurled his third straight complete game, scattering eight hits over seven innings and giving up the two runs while walking one and striking out four.

Castillo was 3-for-4 with an RBI in game two and Plumley was 2-for-3 with two RBI after going 4-for-4 in the opener.

ORU and Southern Utah wrap up their four-game series with a 7-inning game at 12 noon on Sunday.
