TULSA, Okla. -- Alex Chalfant struck a
career-high 11 batters in game one and Grant Plumley continued his
recent hot hitting in game two as Oral Roberts University swept a
Mid-Continent Conference doubleheader from Southern Utah, taking
the opener by a 7-1 count and winning the nightcap 7-2, Saturday at
J.L. Johnson Stadium.
ORU (29-17, 10-1) extended its season-best winning streak to 10
games with the two wins. Southern Utah (1-22, 5-6) now trails first
place ORU by five games in the Mid-Con standings.
Chalfant (3-2) allowed one unearned run on five hits over 6.1
innings. He walked two in addition to his career-high 11
strikeouts, and has struck out 21 batters in 11.1 innings over his
last two starts. A freshman right-hander, Chalfant's performance in
game one came one night after fellow freshman Taylor McIntyre, a
lefty, fanned 12 without a walk in a complete game victory over
SUU.
Dennis Bigley belted a three-run homer in the first inning of
game one, giving Chalfant more than enough to work with. Chalfant
and reliever Justin Ramsey, who pitched 2.2 innings of one-hit
relief for his third save, combined to strike out 15 batters in
nine innings.
Josh Lex and Ryan Welborn drove in runs in the sixth for a 5-1
lead and Lex later added an RBI groundout for a 6-1 advantage in
the seventh. Kevin Lamb scored from third in the eighth inning when
Matt VanDerBosch was caught in a run down between first and
second.
Wes Matthews (2-2) suffered the loss for Southern, allowing six
runs on 10 hits in 6.1 innings.
In game two, the Golden Eagles struggled in the early innings
against Jason Gillins (1-3), before taking a 2-0 lead in the third.
Plumley, who was 6-for-7 in the doubleheader, knocked had an RBI
double and later scored on David Castillo's single. ORU added three
more runs in the fifth with two scoring on a Lex single for a 5-0
lead.
The Thunderbirds cut it to 5-1 with a run in the top of the
sixth, but ORU made it 7-1 with an RBI squeeze bunt from
VanDerBosch and an RBI groundout by Plumley. Southern Utah scored a
run in the top of the seventh for the final margin.
Dallas Martin (5-6) hurled his third straight complete game,
scattering eight hits over seven innings and giving up the two runs
while walking one and striking out four.
Castillo was 3-for-4 with an RBI in game two and Plumley was
2-for-3 with two RBI after going 4-for-4 in the opener.
ORU and Southern Utah wrap up their four-game series with a
7-inning game at 12 noon on Sunday.
