TULSA, Okla. -- Dennis Bigley struck out a
career-high 14 batters, including 10 of the first 13 hitters he
faced, and David Castillo and Scott Campbell each homered as Oral
Roberts University blanked Southern Utah 10-0, Sunday at J.L.
Johnson Stadium. The win, ORU's 11th consecutive, gives the Golden
Eagles a sweep of the four-game Mid-Continent Conference
series.
Bigley (7-2) allowed just three hits and walked one in his first
career complete game shutout. The sophomore right-hander struck out
seven straight batters from the first through third innings, and 10
of 11 batters through the first four innings.
He struck out the side in the second, fourth and seventh
innings. Bigley faced trouble only once as Southern Utah loaded the
bases with two outs in the fifth, but got out of the jam with a
line out to second.
Castillo belted a three-run homer in the first inning
�€" his league-leading 13th of the season
�€" and Campbell added a two-run shot in the sixth, his
third of the year.
Ahead 3-0, the Golden Eagles took a 6-0 lead with three runs in
the third off SUU starter Caleb Anderson (0-1), with Ande Collup's
two-run single highlighting the frame.
Collup added a run on a fielder's choice grounder in the fifth
for a 7-0 lead, and pinch runner Herman Galatas scored on a
throwing error after stealing third base as ORU went ahead 8-0.
Bigley's performance was part of an amazing weekend for ORU
pitchers. The Golden Eagles struck out 45 batters and walked just
four 32 innings against the Thunderbirds, allowing only 20 hits and
five runs (four earned).
Three starters �€" Taylor McIntyre (12), Alex
Chalfant (11) and Bigley �€" all recorded career-high's
in strikeouts this weekend against Southern Utah.
Campbell led ORU's efficient offense on Sunday, going 2-for-3
with three runs scored and two RBI. Castillo was 2-for-4 with three
RBI and Kevin Lamb had two hits. ORU also stole six bases, giving
them 17 as a team for the weekend.
ORU returns to action when they visit Mid-Con foe Oakland for a
four-game series beginning next Saturday in Rocherster, MI.
