CA�€"Dennis Bigley (Lancaster,
Texas) belted a grand slam as part of a 7-run sixth inning and Oral
Roberts University extended its winning streak to 10 games with a
13-3 win over Pepperdine in the Yellow Book USA Classic, Sunday at
Eddy D. Field Stadium. The game was halted in the bottom of the
seventh due to the 10-run rule.
With the win ORU (13-3)
wins the championship of the Yellow Book USA Classic, after
defeating No. 18 UC-Irvine on Friday,
Washington State on Saturday, and host Pepperdine (6-10) on
Sunday.
Already leading 6-0
entering the sixth, the Golden Eagles sent 13 batters to the plate
during the inning. ORU loaded the bases with none out against
reliever Nelson Caraballo and Brian Hanson (Kelseyville,
Calif.) delivered a two-run double for an 8-0 Golden Eagles
lead.
After a groundout,
Josh Lex (Elk
Grove, Calif.) singled home Matt VanDerBosch (Hastings,
Minn.) putting OU up 9-0 and, after Ricky Rivera (Santa Isabel,
P.R.) was hit to load the bases, Bigley emptied them with a drive
over the left-centerfield wall for a 13-0 lead. The home run was
Bigley's fourth of the season.
The Golden Eagles got
on the board early scoring three runs in the top of the first, with
all three coming with two outs. Grant Plumley (Lake Forest,
Calif.) singled and Lex followed with a home run over the netting
in left for a 2-0 lead. Rivera was hit by a pitch and Bigley
doubled him in for a 3-0 lead.
Plumley's RBI double in
the second gave ORU a 4-0 lead, and Plumley struck again in the
fourth, knocking in two runs with his second double of the game for
a 6-0 Golden Eagles lead.
Sean Sorrow (Bakersfield,
Calif.) baffled the Waves through the first five innings before
Pepperdine reached him for three runs in the bottom of the sixth,
including a two-run home run by Chad Tracy.
Pepperdine threatened
to keep the game alive in the bottom of the seventh, putting
runners on the corners with two outs. But Tim Robertson (Huntington
Beach, Calif.), who came on to start the innings, struck out Brent
Lewis to end the game.
Plumley, Lex and Kevin
Lamb (Owasso, Okla.) each had three hits as ORU reached three
Pepperdine pitchers for 13 hits. Bigley was 2-for-4 with five RBI,
while Plumley and Lex each had three RBI.
Sorrow (2-1) allowed
three runs on seven hits over six inning, striking out five wan
walking two in getting his second win of the week. Sorrow was a
complete game winner in Tuesday's home win over Southwest Missouri
State.
Kea Kometani (1-3) took
the loss for Pepperdine, allowing six runs on six hits in five
innings.
The Golden Eagles
return home to host Kansas, 3 p.m., Tuesday at J.L. Johnson
Stadium.
