ROCHESTER, MI�€"Taylor McIntyre (Edmond,
Okla.) and Daniel
Greenwalt (LaHabra, Calif.) combined on a six-hitter in
game one, and Dennis
Bigley (Lancaster, Texas) hurled 6.1 shutout innings and
blasted a solo home run in game two as Oral Roberts University
swept a Mid-Continent Conference doubleheader from Oakland, winning
2-1 and 10-0, Saturday afternoon.
Game one featured
strong pitching for both teams, as McIntyre and Oakland's Paul
Phillips (0-6) gave up just one run apiece over the first six
innings.
ORU (21-14, 6-0
Mid-Con) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third. Catcher Brian Aguailar
(Lompoc, Calif.) led off with a walk, moved to second on a
sacrifice bunt, advanced to third on an error and scored on second
baseman Brian
Hanson's (Kelseyville, Calif.) sacrifice fly.
Oakland (3-22, 1-5)
tied it against McIntyre in the bottom of the sixth when Ty
Herriott's RBI single scored Brian Recknagel to make it 1-1.
The game remained tied
until the Golden Eagles pushed across the deciding run in the top
of the eighth. ORU loaded the bases with one out and Bigley drove
in leftfielder Travis
DeBondt (Bakersfield, Calif.) from third with a sac fly
for a 2-1 lead.
Greenwalt (4-1), who
came on for McIntyre to start the seventh inning, faced the minimum
number of batters, allowing only a one-out walk in the seventh.
Greenwalt struck out four and lowered his conference-leading ERA to
2.17 with 3.0 shutout innings of work.
In game two, Bigley
(6-2) extended his consecutive scoreless streak to 20.1 innings
with his third straight strong outing. And after being held in
check by Phillips in the opener, the bats came alive in game two,
pounding out a season-high tying 16 hits in the 7-inning game.
The Golden Eagles
opened the scoring in the top of the first, taking a 1-0 lead on
another Bigley sacrifice fly.
First baseman Rene Recio (Corpus
Christi, Texas) belted a two-run home run �€" his
first of two in the game -- in the top of the third for a 3-0 lead,
and Kelly
Minissale (Murphy, Texas) collected an RBI single four
batters later for a 4-0 lead.
ORU put the game away
in the top of the seventh with six runs. Recio blasted a 3-run
homer for a 6-0 lead, Bigley followed with a solo homer for a 7-0
lead, and Minissale and Aguailar had RBI singles to put ORU up
10-0.
Bigley allowed two hits
and two walks, striking out five batters. He was relived by Matt Hancock
(Okmulgee, Okla.) with one out and nobody on in the seventh, and
Hanock retired the final two batters to preserve the shutout.
Oakland's Paul Hines
(1-3) took the loss in game two, allowing eight runs on 12 hits in
6-plus innings of work.
Recio led ORU's offense
in game two, going 3-for-4 with five RBI. Shortstop Michael Hollimon (Dallas,
Texas) rightfielder Kevin Lamb (Owasso, Okla.),
Minissale and Hanson each had three hits. Minissale and Bigley each
drove in a pair of runs.
The Golden Eagles and
Golden Grizzlies conclude their weekend series with a Noon
doubleheader on Sunday.
