Strong Pitching Leads ORU to Doubleheader Sweep at Oakland

ROCHESTER, MI€"Taylor McIntyre (Edmond, Okla.) and Daniel Greenwalt (LaHabra, Calif.) combined on a six-hitter in game one, and Dennis Bigley (Lancaster, Texas) hurled 6.1 shutout innings and blasted a solo home run in game two as Oral Roberts University swept a Mid-Continent Conference doubleheader from Oakland, winning 2-1 and 10-0, Saturday afternoon.

Game one featured strong pitching for both teams, as McIntyre and Oakland's Paul Phillips (0-6) gave up just one run apiece over the first six innings.

ORU (21-14, 6-0 Mid-Con) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third. Catcher Brian Aguailar (Lompoc, Calif.) led off with a walk, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, advanced to third on an error and scored on second baseman Brian Hanson's (Kelseyville, Calif.) sacrifice fly.

Oakland (3-22, 1-5) tied it against McIntyre in the bottom of the sixth when Ty Herriott's RBI single scored Brian Recknagel to make it 1-1.

The game remained tied until the Golden Eagles pushed across the deciding run in the top of the eighth. ORU loaded the bases with one out and Bigley drove in leftfielder Travis DeBondt (Bakersfield, Calif.) from third with a sac fly for a 2-1 lead.

Greenwalt (4-1), who came on for McIntyre to start the seventh inning, faced the minimum number of batters, allowing only a one-out walk in the seventh. Greenwalt struck out four and lowered his conference-leading ERA to 2.17 with 3.0 shutout innings of work.

In game two, Bigley (6-2) extended his consecutive scoreless streak to 20.1 innings with his third straight strong outing. And after being held in check by Phillips in the opener, the bats came alive in game two, pounding out a season-high tying 16 hits in the 7-inning game.

The Golden Eagles opened the scoring in the top of the first, taking a 1-0 lead on another Bigley sacrifice fly.

First baseman Rene Recio (Corpus Christi, Texas) belted a two-run home run €" his first of two in the game -- in the top of the third for a 3-0 lead, and Kelly Minissale (Murphy, Texas) collected an RBI single four batters later for a 4-0 lead.

ORU put the game away in the top of the seventh with six runs. Recio blasted a 3-run homer for a 6-0 lead, Bigley followed with a solo homer for a 7-0 lead, and Minissale and Aguailar had RBI singles to put ORU up 10-0.

Bigley allowed two hits and two walks, striking out five batters. He was relived by Matt Hancock (Okmulgee, Okla.) with one out and nobody on in the seventh, and Hanock retired the final two batters to preserve the shutout.

Oakland's Paul Hines (1-3) took the loss in game two, allowing eight runs on 12 hits in 6-plus innings of work.

Recio led ORU's offense in game two, going 3-for-4 with five RBI. Shortstop Michael Hollimon (Dallas, Texas) rightfielder Kevin Lamb (Owasso, Okla.), Minissale and Hanson each had three hits. Minissale and Bigley each drove in a pair of runs.

The Golden Eagles and Golden Grizzlies conclude their weekend series with a Noon doubleheader on Sunday.
